Armenia (in Armenian Hayastan) - counrty situated on the West of Asia, in Transcaucasus. The area is 29,8 thousand square kilometres.Borders on the north with Georgia, on the east with Azerbaijan, on the south with Iran, on the West and south-west with Turkey. The capital of Armenia is Yerevan. It was founded in 8 b.c. The population is 1258 thousand(2002).

According to the enumeration of the population 2003 in Armenia from the officially registrated 3326 thousand people, actually only 3003 thousand people lived there. In 1989 the number of the population was 3,3 million, in 1979-3,7 million.

The history of Armenia - is in its way a treasury-house from which scientists, amateurs and every educated reader interested in great events and great people of ancient centuries can draw a lot of treasures hidden in it. Some will be attracted with scientific problems, brought up by her, some with the amazing destinies of the people, which has played such an important role, the third-with the dramatic moments of Armenia’s past and with great political and public figures.

Armenian peoples - one of the most ancient modern people, which has come to the world from such deep centuries, when not only modern for us European people didn’t exist, but even hardly were originating people of ancient antiquity-Romans and Ellins. The name of the country Arminia and the people Armini are first met in the cuneiforms of Persian king Dareh I, who was reining in 522-486 b.c.

Language. Armenian alphabet was created by enlightener, scientist, monarch Mesrop Mashtoz in 405-406.Armenian language is related to the family of indo-European languages. Classical Armenian (ancient Armenian-grapar-written form) today is used only for divine services. Modern literary Armenian has two main branches: West-Armenian language (also called Araratian) speak people from Armenia and Armenians who live in other countries of CIN, in Iran, in India and East-Armenian language, which speak Armenians spread in the whole world except people who live in the above mentioned countries. Armenian language is also represented in many dialects approximately sixty.

Religion. Armenians were turned into Chritianity owing to activities of Gregory Enlightener (in Armenian Grigor Lusavorich, later was canonized) in 301,and Armenia has become the first country in the world adopting Christianity as a state religion. Though Armenian Apostolic Church was independent from the beginning it was maintaining relations with other Chritian churches up to Xarcidonian (451) and Costantinopolian (551) World Cathedrals and then it maintained close relations only with monophysitical churches: Coptical (Egypt), Ethiopian and

Yakovotian (Syria). Armenian Apostolic Church heads Catholic of all Armenians, whose residence from 1441 is in Echmiadzin. In 2001 Armenia was celebrating the 1700 anniversary of adopting Christianity as a state religion. According to the invitation of Armenian Apostolic churche’s head Supreme patriarch, holy Catholic of all Armenians Garegin II in the solemn ceremony of sanctifying St.Gregory Enlightener’s cathedral, which was built for the anniversary, were participating the head of Russian Orthodox church, patriarch of Moscow and Russia Alexander II and the head of Roman Catholic church Ioan Paul II.

Genocide. After the beginning of  World War I Turkish get down to the solution of "Armenian question" by the way of violent exiles of all Armenians from Asia Minor. Soldiers-Armenians serving in the Turkish army, were demobilized and shot, women, children and the old were moved by force to the deserts of Syria. At that time almost 1,5 million people were killed. Many of those Armenians who survived owing to the help of Turkish and Kurds escaped into Russian Armenia or other countries.
